I don’t offer one-off dream interpretations and there are some very good reasons for this. Please see My Approach which explains these reasons.
Originally, I worked as a Counsellor in Depth Psychology. Over time, my own dreamwork led me understand that Dream Analysis was what I needed to focus on. As Carl Jung said, “Dreams are pure nature; they offer an unfiltered snapshot of the dreamer’s psychology”, which is tremendously helpful in identifying the work we need to focus on within ourselves.
One of the most significant contributions that Jung made to psychology was the understanding that although many dream symbols are universal, they are inherently linked and to some degree personalised to the dreamer’s own psyche. What this means is that a particular dream symbol can hold a different meaning to a universal meaning, based on such things as the dream context, the dreamer’s stage of life & life experience, and importantly, the wounding (complexes) that the dreamer has endured in their life experience. This means that dreams symbols are often paradoxical and learning to work with paradox is a major emphasis of my work.
The Jungian & Depth Psychology frameworks place a great deal of importance on dreams and their vital role in helping guide and heal the individual. These frameworks also emphasise that the Unconscious (where dreams are created) uses natural/archetypal symbols as its language to convey its messages, so great emphasis is placed on understanding the language of natural/archetypal symbols. From a personal perspective, after working with several other methods of dream interpretation, it was only when I immersed myself in Jungian and Depth Psychology, that I noticed a significant and profound response from the Unconscious.
Yes and I believe Jung’s understanding of the lucid dreaming process is really helpful to those who are experiencing lucid dreams. Please see the section – The Types Of Dreams I Work With for more information.
This is a complex area and one I will be writing a number of blogs on in the future. From an overall perspective, the dramatic rise in an atheistic, materialistic, reductionist, hyper-rational paradigm sweeping the world over the last 50 years in particular, has greatly influenced how modern psychology is often conducted. Key understandings in Jungian & Depth Psychology, such as the Collective Unconscious, Archetypes, intuition, the transpersonal aspect of the psyche, paradox and the vital role of dreams in a person’s life, do not fit into the modern paradigm and this comes at a great cost to society and is a contributing reason to the significant rise in mental-illness in modern society.
It is important firstly to state that I have a very high level of respect for the Jungian Analyst community. The dream symbols I specialise in working with connect deeply with the transpersonal aspect of the psyche. Jung’s later writings increasingly addressed the nature of the transpersonal aspect of the psyche. These writings include Aion, Symbols Of Transformation, Psychology and Alchemy and Mysterium Coniunctionis. Working with the transpersonal aspect of the psyche (the Self), is where I am strongly drawn to in my work as a Dream Analyst & Dream Therapist and given this, there are significant advantages in not being bound to a fixed model & practice. As part of my method, I regularly introduce ideas and teachings concerning the transpersonal psyche that fall outside, or are, extensions of Jung’s writings.
Comparative dream analysis is the process of working with a particular dream and studying other related dreams that share similar symbolic/archetypal themes, figures and events. As with comparative mythology, comparative dream analysis is a very helpful tool in tracking important symbols within the psyche and their evolution over the course of time. I have access to many published dreams as well as over a thousand of my own recorded dreams.
Generally speaking, and depending on the dreams symbols that the individual has experienced, often in the beginning, meeting every week or fortnight is beneficial. However, as the dreamwork continues, it is common for appointments to be made further apart because my dreamwork method is aimed towards each person becoming increasingly capable of working with their own dreams.
